DIY Wood Solutions

How to create simple home decor and organizing solutions with wood.

Welcome

Think big, act small.

Judy Riley

In this day and age of pressure to achieve big things, I urge you to find the joy in starting with something small. Working with your hands to create even the smallest of projects can be calming, meditative, productive, and joyful! All the projects you see here began with a small action. I hope you will join me in finding the joy of Doing It Yourself.

Wood Storage Caddy

A wood storage cart is a must for all the scrap wood that accumulates from multiple projects. This one is on wheels to move around easily and has two sides; one to accommodate large pieces and one to hold a lot of smaller pieces. That way there’s no hunting through big piles of scrap wood for what you need.

Attach Wheels

I started with what most people would do last…attaching the wheels. I did this because I’m working alone and didn’t want to have to flip the whole thing on it’s side to do this last.

I flipped the bottom over so it was sitting on it’s wheels. Starting with the side for smaller pieces, I used a Kreg Pocket Hole Jig and spaced 4 sets of pocket holes along one side. See here for information on using this jig and where to purchase it.

This is an inexpensive jig that opens up a world of possibilities for low-tech joinery. And very strong too!! I use it on most things now. Wouldn’t be without it.

I applied glue to the edge of the second divider piece, clamping it to the bottom at each end. The pocket holes I just drilled can be seen just to the right of the clamp. Using the bit provided with the Kreg jig, screws were placed at 12″ intervals along the backside of the divider. The speed square ensures a 90 degree angle.

The same process was followed for the 3rd divider.

…and the same for the remainder of the dividers. I chose to place one less divider on the side for larger scrap pieces as they would be thicker and fewer in number.

I added one end piece, attaching it to the dividers with screws from the outside rather than using the Kreg jig to pocket hole the dividers from the inside.

The second side piece was attached in the same way. This is the view from the “large” scrap-piece side.
